I caught up with Instagram influencer Caitlyn Hope last week to discuss her philosophy around wellness.
Caitlyn is a Jersey girl with a love for anything outdoors. A Registered Nurse, wife, and puppy mom. She loves tacos and wine. She's also a committed yoga addict and will be a 200hr Registered Yoga Teacher at the end of February. She was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Disease last March which is what spurred her to begin her journey of holistic healing.
Why is health important to you?
Health is the most important thing in our lives. What we do with our bodies is imperative.. to do our best, to take care of ourselves, to eat better, to exercise, and to try as much as possible to prevent diseases. I try to do my best of living a healthy lifestyle by washing my hands frequently, eating nourishing foods that fuel my body, exercise at least 3-4 times a week and give my body proper self-care. As a Registered Nurse, it is my passion to help others realize their health is so fragile and important. It's the little healthy steps you do daily that will lead you to a long, healthy life.
Do you have a dietary philosophy? Are coffee, tea, or superfoods a part of that?
Last year, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Disease (an autoimmune disease of the thyroid). After my diagnosis, I researched ways on how to naturally heal my body. Much research has shown that inflammation feeds on gluten (wheat, oats, rye and barley). I went completely gluten free for 3 months and now eat mostly gluten free and it has helped to decrease the symptoms of Hashimoto's. I definitely love tea and try to drink 1 cup a day of pure, natural tea. I also eat superfoods to fuel my body as much as I can. In the summer months, my go-to is always a smoothie.
What do you look for in health products or brands that you support?
When looking for foods to eat I look for non-msg, no artificial flavors, and nutrient-dense foods. As a Registered Nurse, I am always on the go. I look for foods that can fuel me for hours.
How do you stay motivated to work out and eat healthy during the cold winter months?
I stay motivated to work out and eat healthy during the winter months by making sure I stay consistent year round. I schedule my workouts ahead of time so I can't make excuses like, "It's too cold or I'll wake up early tomorrow". Plan your schedule for the week in advance and don't make excuses. In the winter months, I make sure I always have plenty of fruits and vegetables in my fridge to help me stay on track.
What do you find are the biggest stumbling blocks for someone who wants to improve their fitness?
The biggest stumbling block for someone who wants to improve their fitness is committing to your goals. They say it takes 21 days to form a new habit. The first month is the hardest, but just stick with your goals and I promise you'll never look back!
What are the best ways you’ve found to overcome them?
Make realist short term and long term goals. Check them off your list as you complete them. For each goal you finish, reward yourself (new workout clothes, a new book, a night out, etc.).
Do you have fitness goals for yourself? If so, what are they?
I have an absolute love for yoga. I am currently half way through my 200hr Yoga Teacher Training. My goal is to spread my love of yoga to the world and show people that yoga is for everyone! Check out my IG page @shanti_love10! I am currently working on forearm-stands and handstands.
What gives you the most energy? How do you maintain peak energy levels?
Fueling my body with nourishing, nutrient dense foods is so important to keep my energy levels up. If I really want to give my energy a kick, I will take an all natural pre-workout to give me that extra zing.
What does balance mean to you? How do you stay balanced?
Living a balanced life is a topic that has been discussed a lot in my Yoga Teacher Training. Balance is inner peace and happiness. Balance is the understanding that my life is full, yet I have plenty of room to bring something new into it. Balance is taking care of my body without forgetting my soul. Balance is walking outside and seeing the beauty around me that inspires me day after day. Balance is my focus on the most important things in my life and not being afraid to let go of less important tasks. Balance is an imperfect mixture of creativity, work, family, love, exercise and personal time. It’s very unique, chaotic at times and totally worth it and beautiful.
